During the presentation

“Preparing, designing and communicating a presentation is a creative act” .

The defense of a final degree project (TFG) is the pinnacle to know if the graduate has the intellectual and professional ability to face the work and academic life in the knowledge of their career or studies. It is a single moment, rarely, you can present it more than once, but, as such, it must be prepared to be a unique presentation.

Among the considerations that must be borne in mind is the time, manner and form of presentation, argumentative defense and order of the presentation. The juries will take these considerations into account and can not demand more than what their professional ethics asks them to do.

Below will be enough tips to be ready before the presentation and defense of a degree work.

Preparation first of all

He leaves the improvisation for what, in the presentation, as improvised, novel or situations that were not expected or were not prepared.

It starts by extracting the relevant ideas from the base text to later translate it into a presentation tool as a PowerPoint slide show.

It is recommended to follow the Zen philosophy: simplicity, clarity, brevity; and the simplicity of Reynolds: clarity, subtlety, essentialism and minimalism.

For undergraduates, the average time to defend a degree work is 10 minutes, with a subsequent space of five minutes for the reply and attention of observations by the jury. In graduate school, the time is not more than five additional minutes of the one used in undergraduate.

Of content
A good way to present the work of degree is to follow the structure of the creation of articles IMRaD (Introduction, Methods, Results, and Discussion).. Also the structure that makes up the introduction of a degree work. With this, details are not escaped and the presentation is made in an orderly manner.

Another way to make a presentation is with the simplest structure: the narrative scheme of beginning, development and end.

To continue with the development, highlight the strong points as the relevant ideas and the own contributions. All general knowledge will be left aside, unless it is essential for the explanation.

From the beginning, make clear what the objective of the degree work is.

Make the minimum number of slides for your presentation (an average of 10 is fine). Never read the slides. Remember that they are only a guide to follow the presentation and defense argument.

In its form

The presentation must be clear and appropriate according to the presentation environment: For dark environments, dark backgrounds with clear letters. For environments with good lighting, clear backgrounds with contrasting foreground. The font size must be greater than 16 pts, in sans serif fonts (without serifs) and only presenting the main ideas. Avoid paragraphs or extended sentences.

It must be done with sober, homogeneous and aesthetic designs.

Make use of transition words to move from one slide to another, following a relationship and order.

Do not leave isolated words

On a slide, you can secure the 6 x 6 rule (it should not have more than six lines and no line more than six words) to be read and understood easily.

One of the rules to follow for presentations is 10/20/30 (no more than 10 slides, in less than 20 minutes and with no less than 30 points).

Personal presentation
Go more sober and standard than personal and particular touches, since the first image can define what follows in the presentation and defense. It may be the first time you meet with a jury.

Control body language and fluent verbal communication, brief and concise, with a tone that does not vary as to ask to increase or decrease it. Do not lose sight of non-verbal communication. Avoid repeating ideas, re-explaining in other words.

This means that time is lost, very valuable for the defense

If you use devices for the presentation, you must first check its operation (turning on, passing of slides, pauses, sound, pointing with laser, etc.).
When closing the presentation, be attentive and take the necessary notes to the jury’s observations. Remember that everything is related and what you want is to test the knowledge in a certain career or area with which you have the opportunity to defend ideas, counterargument or make use of agility as a professional to respond, even in a negative way or by ignorance.

Moment 1: Starting the presentation
The objective when initiating a presentation is to capture the attention of the public (in this case, the jury), communicating the purpose of the presentation and making known a possible order of presentation.

Moment 2: In the presentation
Moment 3: Finishing the presentation
Finally, we must conclude with the results, recommendations and conclusions reached with the development of the work. The main ideas expressed and the arguments that support them must be emphasized.
